Rites of passage are an important part of human development. They mark key times of transition in an individual's life: birth, naming, adulthood, marriage, creating life, becoming an elder, the passing of the body, and being re-born. When these times of transition are marked, ritualized, witnessed, and supported, it creates a kind of experiential map of self-development. Without proper rites of passage, people can become disoriented and lose their way in life's journey. It is as if their life map is incomplete.
Lertzman, "Rediscovering Rites of Passage: Education, Transformation,
and the Transition to Sustainability,"
The ceremonies outlined below grow from my understanding of womanhood as a life-long invitation to explore and unfold our innate giftedness as conscious co-creative female beings... a gift worthy of celebration!
As the ceremony begins, our sense of the women's circle around us widens, ripples back through time.. Each woman recalls her own lineage - naming mothers, grandmothers, aunties and other real-life heroines who may have inspired, guided and encouraged her growth and unfolding as a woman and human-being. There is opportunity for the sharing of women's wisdom - the fruits of a woman's own life experiences and/or inspirational quotes and readings from others which speak to the unique gifts and challenges of being a woman...
Liminal (from the Latin word limen, meaning "a threshold")
The liminal state is characterized by ambiguity, openness, and indeterminacy. One's sense of identity dissolves to some extent, bringing about disorientation. Liminality is a period of transition where normal limits to thought, self-understanding, and behavior are relaxed - a situation which can lead to new perspectives.
